What do you get when you cross a golden retriever and poodle? A goldendoodle, otherwise known as a doodle, of course! Goldendoodles are one of the most common and beloved poodle designer hybrid out there, gaining popularity steadily since the 1990s. They are known to be a wonderful family dog and are affectionate and extremely gentle towards other animals and children like both parent breeds. They need plenty of time with their owners or they will suffer from separation anxiety if they are left alone too long . They are not aggressive dogs but if they are not properly socialized, they may have extreme shyness or fearfulness of strangers, but in most cases, they are friendly towards strangers, so it is best if you want a social dog and not a guard dog if you are considering adding a goldendoodle to your family.
Goldendoodles are not only super loving, but also very intelligent and easy to train. They have been known to be good guide dogs, service dogs, therapy dogs, and sniffer dogs . There was even a test to see if they were good at sniffing out peanuts in foods for owners with nut allergies and if was found that they were, in fact, good for the job.
It is recommended that goldendoodles have a nice sized fenced-in yard to run around in, but if you don't have one, they should do fine with long walks and plenty of exercise and play time. They should have some toys to keep them busy throughout the day so they are not destructive from boredom when you are not home. Some owners find that their doodle is happier with the radio or TV on while they are out.
There are different size goldendoodles: toy, miniature and standard. We only deal with standards, which are normally around 20 to 26 inches at the shoulders and weigh between 50-70 pounds. Their life expectancy is 10-14 years and, as with any dog, there are some health conditions that are more prone to them, however, we do test our dogs for genetic disorders that are typical of their breed and our dogs came back with a clean bill of health.
Grooming is simple for goldendoodles. They lightly shed, if at all, and may be good for people with allergies. They don't need to be brushed but once every week or biweekly. As a bonus, they don't need to be clipped like poodles do, but an owner can choose to get a special haircut for their doodle if they so desire.
Because a goldendoodle is a hybrid, there are different classifications. The percentage of their bloodline is what determines what classification they are.
If you are looking for a lovable, social, intelligent, and easy care dog, then a goldendoodle may be the right hybrid for you.
